The Quetzal bird was considered divine in Mesoamerican mythology and is also the national bird of Guatemala today, appearing on its flag. Its iridescent green feathers symbolized new spring growth and signified freedom and wealth to the Maya. The Guatemalan currency is also called the Quetzal.
